Obituary

It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Dr. K.M. Cherian and Prof. C.V. Ramakrishnan, whose contributions were instrumental in establishing the Physician Assistant (PA) profession in India.

Dr. Cherian (Dr. KMC) was a visionary cardiothoracic surgeon and thinker, who not only excelled in his field but also championed the introduction of the PA profession in India. He is rightly regarded as the ‘Father of the PA profession in India.’ His direct involvement in training the first few batches of PAs left a lasting legacy, as he took immense pride in their success. Dr.KMC believed in the power of collaboration between healthcare providers, and his efforts continue to inspire countless PAs who now serve across the country.

Prof. Ramakrishnan (CVR) was a dedicated academician and steadfast advocate for the rights and futures of economically disadvantaged students. His "never giving up" attitude, combined with his commitment to high-quality education, inspired thousands of students, including many Physician Assistants. His tireless work helped lay the foundation for the PA profession and shaped its growth in India.

A Shared Legacy

Together, Dr. KMC and Prof. CVR laid the groundwork for the PA profession in India, creating a roadmap that continues to guide the healthcare community. Their collective vision transformed the PA role into a vital part of India’s healthcare system.

The Physician Assistant community is deeply grieving the loss of these two leading lights in quick succession. Their absence leaves a significant void, but their legacy will live on in every PA who carries forward their vision and commitment to patient care. The Indian Association of Physician Assistants offers its deepest condolences to their families. Their legacy will continue to inspire and guide us for generations to come.
