About IAPA

The Indian Association of Physician Assistants (IAPA) was created to unify and promote the Physician Assistant profession in India. It serves as a national platform for Physician Associates, clinicians, educators, students, and researchers. Our goal is to strengthen the professional identity of PAs and support their contributions to healthcare with strong standards, clear recognition, and meaningful career paths.

What We Do

IAPA actively works to strengthen the profession through ongoing professional engagement and collaboration with institutions. We facilitate academic and clinical dialogue through regular meetings, conferences, and professional forums that keep members informed about the latest developments in medicine. We support the creation of structured certification and accreditation pathways to improve professional credibility and practice standards.
By connecting with medical and paramedical associations, academic institutions, and healthcare organizations, IAPA encourages the integration of Physician Associates within multidisciplinary care teams. Our efforts are driven by a commitment to ethical practice, professional unity, and the long-term advancement of the PA profession in India.
Why IAPA Exists?

India’s healthcare is rapidly evolving due to rising diseases, urbanization, lifestyle illnesses, and demand for specialized care, straining the system. Many physicians are specializing, creating a gap in frontline care traditionally handled by junior officers. Physician Associates (PAs), trained in the medical model and working within teams, can fill this gap by supporting doctors and improving care access. IAPA aims to structure, recognize, and strengthen this role nationally, ensuring PAs practice with clarity and confidence.
Our Roots and Global Context

Our Roots and Global Context

The Physician Assistant profession began in the United States with the first PA program established in 1960 by Dr. Eugene Stead at Duke University. This program aimed to address physician shortages and uneven healthcare access, showing that well-trained mid-level clinicians could provide high-quality, patient-accepted care as part of physician-led teams. Over the years, the PA profession gained recognition worldwide for its clinical effectiveness and flexibility.
Inspired by this model, the PA profession was introduced in India in 1992 by Dr. K. M. Cherian at the Madras Medical Mission. Since then, the profession has steadily gained acceptance and expanded in scope. Today, Physician Associates primarily work in tertiary care settings, with growing acknowledgment of their ability to improve access to quality healthcare—especially in overburdened and underserved areas. IAPA draws from these global and national foundations to guide the responsible growth of the profession in India.

The PA Profession in India Today

Physician Associates in India are healthcare professionals trained in a medical model, practicing medicine as part of a supervised healthcare team. They make significant contributions across preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic areas, assisting physicians in delivering timely, efficient, and patient-centered care.

As of February 2025, over 10,000 Physician Associates have graduated in India. More than 25 universities now offer around 130 PA programs nationwide. This rapid growth highlights the profession’s relevance and the urgent need for unified standards, accreditation pathways, and professional representation. IAPA plays a key role in shaping this next growth phase—ensuring that expansion is accompanied by quality, ethics, and long-term professional sustainability.
